What does digital transformation mean for metrology?
Digital transformation is everywhere in society. Metrology is also affected by the digital transformation in many ways. In his paper ‘The digital transformation and novel calibration approaches’ Gertjan Kok, Data Science & Modeling Scientist at VSL Dutch Metrology Institute, discusses how new digital technologies affect the work and the role of National Metrology Institutes such as VSL.
What are the relevant mathematical and statistical effects of the digital transformation for measurement institutes? What effects are there for the modeling of measurement instruments and the analysis of measurement data? Nowadays, measuring instruments already use advanced algorithms developed through artificial intelligence. Virtual instruments and digital twins (virtual representations of a physical object) have found their way into metrology. The use of these types of technologies has a significant impact on the traceability of measurements and the calibration of instruments.
