Metrology in the digital age: where cows, renewable energies and data science meet

Digital transformation is everywhere and therefore also in metrology. Not only does metrology play a role in the digitization of many processes in industry and society, metrology itself is also digitizing. That is why this year’s theme for World Metrology Day is ‘Metrology in the Digital Age’.

The rapid advancement of digital technologies has a major impact on our society. That is why open and transparent exchange of information has become increasingly important. The requirements that data must meet in order to be considered reliable are also becoming increasingly strict. The enormous amount of data that is generated every day is essential for new developments. Digital transformation certainly creates new and inspiring possibilities. To make the most of the benefits of this, we must be able to rely on that data and the models from which it originates.

The validation of models and the determination of the accuracy is of great importance as a basis for, for example, making policy on topics such as the emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonia (NH3). In the video below, Federica Gugole, Scientist Data Science & Modeling, explains this in a conversation with Marijn van Veghel, Sr. Project Manager Electricity, Time & Frequency:

Renewable energysources

These developments also play an important role in the energy transition, for example when it comes to renewables, such as solar and wind energy, in relation to the stability of the electricity grid. Gert Jan Kok, Scientist Data Science & Modelling, tells more about it in a conversation with Marijn van Veghel:

Metrology plays an indispensable role in our daily lives. Now and in the future. That is why we annually reflect on the usefulness and necessity of the art of measurement. In fact, we should do that every day.
